A long time ago Austrian farmers developed Loden footwear out of necessity.
Nowadays, Loden boots are typical items of traditional Tracht clothing in the Dachstein region. Dachstein is now introducing these pieces of ‘Heimat’ with a modern makeover to the whole world with the 2017/18 autumn/ winter collection, featuring two men’s and two women’s models.
At the end of the 18th century the unbearably cold winters in Bad Aussee forced a number of farmers to explore new terrain – clothing design. The winter conditions justified the use of the only suitable materials available in the area. In the Dachstein region those materials were felt, leather and Loden – a coarse, robust woolly fabric.
Step by step to alpine lifestyle
Through the decades this highly functional winter footwear became increasingly popular, developing into a symbol of alpine life far beyond the borders of the Aussee region. Plain working boots became superior quality footwear, although at that time Loden shoe design was of secondary importance.
The long tradition of working with Loden became an integral part of life at the foot of Mount Dachstein, and lives on to this day. That’s a fact Dachstein designer Christoph Döttelmayer clearly understands: ‘I grew up in Bad Aussee – so I grew up with Loden shoes. We wanted to get as close to the originals as possible, so I did lots of research, gathered relevant information and went back to unearth the history for myself. That helped to ensure the use of materials and styles produced reminiscent footwear with a unique identity. Wherever appropriate we also integrated modern technology and adapted the look and feel of our Alpine Lifestyle Collection accordingly.’
Just like the original 18th and 19th century Loden shoes, the new Dachstein models are also completely winterproof due to the use of natural Schladming Loden fabric. Furthermore, the modern Vibram soles guarantee excellent grip and lamb fleece lining ensures feet stay cosily warm.
In tune with the spirit of the collection, each of these nostalgically modern shoes has a typically fitting name: Bergwerk and Jodler for the men – Edelweiß and Jodlerin for the ladies. These high-end, edge-seamed shoes from the Dachstein Alpine Lifestyle Collection are modern reinterpretations of original Aussee Loden shoes and will be available in the shops from autumn 2017.
Dedicated footwear to my grandfather Heinrich. The bravest person I have met in my life.
